The national news over the past several days has gotten us thinking about what we can do to help other people.  There are many great organizations, a few of which we touch on in this week’s edition of things to do in New Orleans.  There are several meaningful and exciting upcoming events this weekend, too many to list in a brief piece, however, we here at Big Easy magazine would like to touch on a few events and service opportunities coming up this weekend.

Want to get some exercise and love animals?  Then do we have the volunteering opportunity for you!  Local animal rescue, Zeus’ Place, offers many different volunteering opportunities.  Learn more about this wonderful organization and fill out a volunteer form here to give some rescue dogs and cats some much needed love.  Dog walking is a great way to get exercise!  In addition to these repeating volunteering opportunities there is also an exciting raffle that will be going on will be a raffle via Zeus’ place from today until July 5th.  All monies raised go to help local rescue animals in need!  Find out more details here!

Another worthwhile organization that helps our animal companions in our area is having an event this weekend.  The Louisiana SPCA will be having a volunteer orientation on Saturday June 23rd at 10AM.  This wonderful organization does so much to help not only strays, but also to rescue animals from abusive and neglectful conditions.  Read more about their rich history and all that they do for our community here!   Get involved and volunteer with them here!

There are also people in New Orleans who do not have their basic needs met.  Help battle food insecurity and hunger by volunteering with the Second Harvest Food Bank this weekend!  This group keeps a well-stocked pantry of non-perishables for families and individuals who need help with hunger.  Get involved and combat hungerin the Greater New Orleans areahere!

If working outside and doing hands on labor is what gets your blood flowing, volunteering with the local chapter of habitat for humanity can be a great way to spend a day.  Their goal is to build affordable housing for those who need it. Be sure to check out how to get involved here!

In addition to all of these service opportunities, there are also, as always, a great deal of shows and concerts worth checking out.  The one that we’ll focus on for this weekend is a concert that is occurring at One Eyed Jack’s on Friday June 22ndGuided by Voices is taking the stage at 10PM and is sure to put on a unique and rocking show.  Be sure to check out their mellow rock on Youtube!  They’re even better live.  More importantly, the bar at which this show is occurring at is located at 615 Toulouse St. in the French Quarter.  It’s a great place to end the night after a pleasant evening of strolling through Jackson Square and along Decatur Street and grabbing some dinner at one of the many great restaurants in the Quarter.  Or, if you’re a night owl, it’s a great place to start the night, before continuing on to a bar hop along Royal Street and Frenchmen.  Either way, it is a great venue and is bound to be a great show.

Whatever you end up doing this weekend, don’t forget to keep on drinking water!  Be kind! Be New Orleans!  Lastly, don’t forget to check out our things to do in New Orleans section on our website for many other good ideas on how to get the most out of your weekend.
