Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard Announces 2020 Run

Hawaii’s Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard announced on Friday that she has decided to run for President in 2020.

“I have decided to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week,” Gabbard said. The announcement came during an interview that will run on CNN’s Van Jones on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Gabbard is an Iraq War veteran and currently serves as a member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. She is also both the first Hindu and American Samoan member of Congress.

While Gabbard said that there are “a lot of challenges” that she hopes to help solve, including climate change, healthcare access, and criminal justice reform, “There is one main issue that is central to the rest, and that is the issue of war and peace,” Gabbard said. “I look forward to being able to get into this and talk about it in depth when we make our announcement.”

Rania Batrice, who served as deputy campaign manager for Bernie Sanders in 2016 will be Gabbard’s campaign manager.

In her time in Congress, Gabbard has taken an anti-interventionist stance on foreign policy. She drew widespread criticism for meeting with Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad in 2017. Of that meeting, Gabbard said, “Initially, I hadn’t planned on meeting him. When the opportunity arose to meet him, I did so because I felt it was important that if we profess to truly care about the Syrian people, about their suffering, then we’ve got to be able to meet with anyone that we need to if there is a possibility that we could achieve peace.”

Gabbard joings Senator Elizabeth Warren and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro in the Democratic field aiming to take on President Donald Trump in 2020.
