According to Dayton, Ohio police, nine people have been killed and another sixteen injured in a second mass shooting in less than 24 hours. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is also dead.
Dayton Deputy Director and Assistant Chief of the Police Lt. Col. Matt Carper told reporters early Sunday morning that the incident happened at around 1 a.m. outside a bar on East 5th Street in the Oregon District in Dayton, Ohio.
According to police, the suspect fired a “long gun” with multiple rounds before he was shot and killed by officers responding at the scene.
An employee who worked at Ned Peppers, the bar on the street near the scene of the shooting, confirmed in an Instagram post that all of their staff is safe.
As of 4;30 a.m., the suspect has not been identified; and although a motive is not yet known, authorities believe this is an isolated incident. However, an investigation is currently ongoing.
This shooting comes off the heels of another deadly mass shooting that occurred outside of a Wal-Mart adjacent to a shopping mall in El Paso, Texas within a 24 hour time frame.
There have been a total of at least 32 mass shootings in the United States this year. A mass shooting is defined as three or more killings in a single episode.
