Remaining Krewe of Nyx Lieutenants Resign After Demands for Captain’s Resignation and More not Met

On June 1, Julie Lea, Captain of Krewe of Nyx, posted an image of a black child and a white child with the title All Lives Matter on their official Instagram page. In response, the lieutenants and members asserted that the trope “All Lives Matter” undermines the Black Lives Matter movement. Shortly after, Lea issued an apology regarding the Instagram post on behalf of the Krewe of Nyx. However, after the float lieutenants met with Lea on June 3 to discuss the departure of members and the recent Instagram post, they made clear that they were unsatisfied with the tone and remarks from Lea. Earlier today, Big Easy Magazine published a copy of the letter dated June 7 that was addressed to the captain from several members who pointed out the derisive and offensive comments made by Lea. You can read the full text of the letter here. Consequently, 1,000 members resigned in addition to the 1,000 that did not renew after the 2020 parade season.

Big Easy Magazine has now obtained another letter dated June 7 from the Krewe members asking for the resignation of Julie Lea along with a list of additional demands to be met within 24 hours of receipt of the the letter.  The letter made clear that if the demands were not met then the remaining float lieutenants and riders would resign. Just this afternoon, Big Easy Magazine has received a response from Captain Julie Lea’s lawyer in which he stated Lea will not succumb to the bullying demands of the lieutenants.  We have now learned that the remaining lieutenants have resigned. We have included screenshots of the June 7 letter from the lieutenants addressed to the captain as well as the response from Lea’s lawyer dated June 8.
