Eight children and 12 staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 as the result of a coronavirus outbreak at the City of New Orleans Juvenile Justice Intervention Center (JJIC).

According to a statement issued by Mayor LaToya Cantrell, all of the juveniles were asymptomatic, and that further testing of both youth and staff at the center is ongoing. The families of the children as well of their attorneys have been notified and are being updated “as each case evolves.”

Currently, 42 youth are housed at the JJIC, overseen by a total of 56 staff members. City officials state that proper protocols are being followed according to local and state-issued COVID-19 guidelines.
