Mayor Cantrell released a statement today that seniors in New Orleans who are at least 70 years old can now get the COVID-19 vaccine. To get the vaccine you must call ahead to an approved pharmacy that is carrying the vaccine.

You can find the list of approved pharmacies here. Some New Orleans locations include Carr Drugs #1 in Algiers, Crescent City Pharmacy downtown, Broad Avenue Pharmacy, Ochsner Pharmacy and Wellness Lake Terrace, St. Bernard Drugs LLC, and Michoud Pharmacy in New Orleans East.

The vaccine will be available at 100 pharmacies across the state, in very limited quantities. It’s expected that each pharmacy will get about 100 doses.

The version of the vaccine being distributed in this round is the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Like the Pfizer vaccine it requires 2 doses, however, its doses must be administered 28 days apart not 21 days apart like the Pfizer vaccine.

It isn’t just those over 70 who qualify for it, if you are ambulatory/outpatient care personnel, being treated for end-stage renal disease, schools of allied health students, residents, or staff, or if you’re home agency patients and personnel you also qualify. This priority group includes about 640,000 people in Louisiana.

The first round of vaccines were administered to healthcare workers, nursing home staff and residents, Emergency Medical Service employees, and firefighters in mid-December. Since then, Louisiana has gotten almost 200,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines.
