Louisiana OMV Warning of Third-Party Vehicle Registration Websites

Officials with the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) are warning residents should avoid using third-party websites for vehicle registration services.

These sites are not affiliated with the OMV and often overcharge for services. In addition, they may collect users’ personal data and credit card information, putting them at risk for identity theft. The only website you should use to renew your vehicle registration, driver’s license, or for other OMV services is expresslane.org. The site has no third-party advertisements and displays the OMV slogan and State of Louisiana seal in the upper left corner.

In order to renew your vehicle registration online, you will need your Renewal Identification Number if you have received a Vehicle Registration Renewal Notice. If not, you will need the information found on your current vehicle registration certificate. If you have received a renewal notice that does not contain a renewal ID, you are not eligible to renew online and will need to call or visit the OMV for assistance.

“We have had reports from our citizens who were deceived into providing sensitive information to other websites,” said OMV Commissioner Karen St. Germain. “We encourage our customers to utilize our online services when they can, but they should be aware of the dangers associated with some third-party websites.”

If you are aware of any website attempting to impersonate the OMV or offering OMV services, you can report these sites to the Louisiana State Police using the secure reporting form on their website.
