In a press release from Mayor Cantrells office, they announced with funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, Mayor Cantrell, along with NORD (New Orleans Recreation Development) CEO Larry Babino Jr. broke ground on the new 11,418 square-foot Desire Florida multi-service center. Cantrell said that they are, “…excited that this NORD facility will provide year-round programming for seniors during the day and after school and cultural programs during the evening hours. This gives NORD more flexibility in serving the residents of the Desire and Florida communities.
Babino added, We are thrilled to bring this new master-planned facility online, with essential and modern amenities to support the surrounding community and seniors year-round.
District D, Councilmember, Jared Brossett agreed saying, From meeting spaces to dance studios to its commercial kitchen, this center is a significant investment in our residents, especially our seniors.
The FEMA-funded facility will have many amenities including a music room, an exterior rear yard, and two rooms with multimedia capabilities. It also includes 38 spaces for on-site off-street parking.
This is one of many projects District D has seen from the Cantrell Administration that currently total $39 million. Other projects include the Nora Navra Library, additions Harden Playground, and Joe Bartholomew Golf Course.
