The Honorable Piper D. Griffin, Associate Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, will conduct the investiture of the members Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee (OPDEC) Wednesday, May 11. The ceremony had been previously cancelled due to COVID-19. Open to the public, the event will be held at McDonogh 35 Senior High School, 4000 Cadillac Street, and begin at 5:30 p.m. A reception will follow the swearing-in.
OPDEC is the grassroots arm of the Louisiana Democratic Party in Orleans Parish. Its 70 members 14 representing each of the citys five council districts are elected every four years. Working with OPDEC is a great way for interested Democrats to experience government at the local level and build strong relationships with other like-minded individuals, said OPDEC Chair Lisa Ray Diggs, newly elected Clerk of Second City Court. There are many important issues facing our citys citizens during this legislative session which OPDEC leaders are involved with including the right to choose and voting rights. We are also looking ahead to the federal mid-term elections where Democrats across the country will be fighting hard to keep control of Congress.
OPDEC is engaged in voter registration efforts to ensure every eligible citizen can cast their ballot. We are always committed to working with individuals who believe in the democratic values our nation was built upon, Diggs said. OPDEC is also interested in meeting men and women who would like to run for elective office. OPDEC can provide the training and experience potential candidates need to become more viable, she concluded.
