Echoing a popular Twitter meme, Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy said earlier this week that banning AR-15s would be a bad idea because Louisianans need to shoot feral pigs.
“If you talk to the people that own it, killing feral pigs in the, whatever, the middle of Louisiana. They’ll wonder: ‘Why would you take it away from me?”
.@elizlanders asked Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy why anyone would need an AR-15.

The statement was a reference to a 2019 hypothetical question that quickly became a meme on Twitter and other social media platforms. User Willie McNabb asked Twitter, “Legit question for rural Americans – How do I kill the 30-50 feral hogs that run into my yard within 3-5 mins while my small kids play?”

According to a list compiled by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence in 2019, Cassidy received $2,867,074 in donations from the National Rifle Association, making him the 9th-highest recipient of NRA donations in the country. The pro-gun organization advocates for the widest possible interpretation of the Second Amendment. Sen. John Kennedy also made the list, receiving $215,788 in donations, placing him in the 21st spot. Both Senators continue to advocate for expanded gun access, in spite of the recent tragedy.
