The FBI has served a search warrant on Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, including his private safe, Trump said on Monday. According to reporting from the New York Times, the search appeared to be focused on documents and materials the former President had brought with him from the White House.
According to the National Archives, which is charged with cataloging presidential materials, has previously said that 15 boxes of materials – including classified documents – had been recovered from Trump’s home. During his term in office Trump was known for ripping up official documents that should have been held for the archives.
These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents, Trump said in a statement. Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before.”
It’s possible that the search is also related to the Justice Department’s investigation into Trump’s attempt to remain in office after losing the 2020 election. In recent weeks, federal prosecutors have been focusing on Trump and his associates in connection with a scheme to send fake electors to Congress for the certification of the Electoral College.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
