Florida Braces for Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian is expected to strengthen to a Category 4 hurricane before making landfall on the central west coast of Florida on Wednesday. As of 2pm EDT on Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center expected Ian to make landfall with 130mph winds, 8 to 12 ft storm surge, and between 12 to 16 inches of rain.

Congress Races to Avoid Gov’t Shutdown

Democratic lawmakers have introduced a stopgap spending measure to finance the federal government through Dec. 16 in a bid to avoid a government shutdown, which could occur on October 1. Both chambers of Congress must approve legislation by the end of Friday, which is the end of the fiscal year. With the midterm elections looming, neither side is eager for a shutdown, increasing the chances of an agreement.

Oath Keeper Leader on Trial for Seditious Conspiracy

Oath Keeper founder Stewart Rhodes and four others began their trial for seditious conspiracy in connection to the Jan. 6 insurrection on Tuesday. Rhodes and his co-defendants are accused of spending months planning, recruiting, training, and conspiring to forcefully prevent the peaceful and lawful transfer of power to President Joe Biden on Jan 6.
