Pelosi Steps Down from Democratic Leadership
Current House Speaker Nanci Pelosi announced on Thursday that she will not seek a leadership role in the new Congress after Democrats lost control of the House to Republicans following the midterm elections. Pelosi had previously said she would need to consider carefully remaining in leadership after her husband Paul suffered a brutal attack at their San Francisco home last month.

Starbucks Workers Go On Strike
Workers at more than 100 Starbucks stores went on strike Thursday in their largest union action since the campaign to unionize workers began. The strike coincides with the company’s Red Cup Day when the company gives free reusable cups to any customer who orders a holiday drink. Workers are asking for better pay, more consistent scheduling, and higher staffing levels in busier stories. According to Starbucks Workers United, workers at stores across 25 states are participating in what some see as part of a larger trend in reviving New Orleans’ labor movement.

Trump Announcement Met with Little Enthusiasm
Former President Donald Trump’s announcement that he will once again seek the presidency was met with little enthusiasm from Republicans this week. The New York Post, notably one of Trump’s favored media outlets relegated the announcement to page 26, under the headline “Florida Man Makes Announcement.” Even Fox News, another Trump favorite, cut away from the broadcast of his announcement. Many conservative media pundits have begun blaming Trump’s involvement in the midterm elections for Republicans’ failure to materialize the “red wave” several were promising, prompting some to question whether real change is on the way for Louisiana’s Democratic Party.
