Judge Robin M. Giarrusso Announces Retirement From Civil District Court Bench

Respected Judge has presided over Division G since 1988

NEW ORLEANS – The Honorable Robin M. Giarrusso – the Judge of Orleans Parish Civil District Court Division G – announced her intention to retire, effective May 1, 2023, following the completion of her landmark 35th year on the bench. Judge Giarrusso first took office on April 29, 1988 and served as Civil District Court’s Chief Judge from 1998-2000. She will retire as the second most senior state court judge in Louisiana.

“These last 35 years on the bench have been incredibly fulfilling,” said Judge Giarrusso. “I am proud of running an efficient docket, being accessible, and being a mentor to younger lawyers and judges.”

“I’m looking forward to spending more time with my granddaughters, continuing to serve the community in a volunteer capacity, and taking some long overdue time to travel,” said Judge Giarrusso.

Prior to her time on the bench, Judge Giarrusso was a Deputy City Attorney, serving as the city’s Chief Legal Counsel for contract and construction litigation and public bid law issues. Before that, she served as an Assistant City Attorney.

Judge Giarrusso received her law degree from Tulane University and undergraduate degree from Newcomb College.

Her civic leadership includes volunteer work for a wide range of local groups, such as past Chair of the Louisiana Judiciary Commission, President of Temple Sinai, member of the National Council of Jewish Women, and the Easter Seal Society.

She has won honors and awards from the Pro Bono Project Award for Distinguished Jurist; National Urban League Award for Distinguished Public Service; “Woman of the Year” from the New Orleans Business and Professional Women’s Club; and “Leaders of Today” from the American-Italian Civic Affairs Committee.

Judge Giarrusso was married to the late Magistrate Joseph I. Giarrusso, Jr. and mother to the late Courtney Giarrusso as well as current District A Councilmember Joseph I. Giarrusso, III.

Former Civil Court Judge Michael Bagneris, who served on the court with Giarrusso, called his former colleague “a great judge, who works hard and is known for efficiently managing her docket. Judge Giarrusso is everything a judge should be––experienced, honest, fair-minded and committed to justice for all people.”
