The citizen-led group known as New Orleans United Front (NOUF) is holding a Town Hall meeting Monday July 29 to educate residents about recent legislation and the NOPD’s ongoing efforts to exit from the federal Consent Decree. The meeting will be held at Cafe Instanbul, 2372 St Claude Ave. between 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Refreshments and cash bar available.
Independent Police Monitor Stella Cziment will give an update on the status of the consent decree and answer any questions. State Rep. Delisha Boyd and others will be on hand to talk about new laws that affect voting.
“We want to be sure that voters are aware of the city’s efforts to wind down the consent decree,” said NOUF member Belden Batiste. “With all the public scrutiny the NOPD’s Public Integrity Bureau (PIB) is currently facing because of its handling of the Jeffrey Vappie Jr. investigation, the consent decree should continue.”
Batiste said he is also concerned that without a consent decree in plan, the NOPD could return to their “old ways” which would mean more unequal treatment for many citizens of color.
“People need to know about the new voting laws and how they impact absentee and mail in voting. There are many important changes that citizens must become familiar with,” Batiste explained.
The New Orleans United Front (NOUF) meets weekly in New Orleans East for planning purposes. For more information call Annette Crawford at 504 799-8399.
