On Monday, January 13th at noon, in front of the Hale Boggs Federal Building (500 Poydras St), New Orleans or Community Oversight of Police (NOCOP) will host a rally and picket line in opposition to the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) entering sustainment.
In September 2024, the city of New Orleans and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) began the process to move the Consent Decree into its two year sustainment period, working to end federal oversight of the NOPD. At every step of this process, the community has been opposed to ending the Consent Decree and has demonstrated their opposition.
The joint motion hearing held on January 13th is the last opportunity for the community to demonstrate their resistance to the NOPD entering the sustainment period. While City and DoJ enter the court, our picketers will greet them in front of the court house. We are joined by many of our allies, including Eyes on Surveillance (EOS), Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO), New Orleans United Front (NOUF), New Orleans Stop Helping Israel’s Ports (NOSHIP), Union Migrante, and New Orleans People for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), to demand that Judge Morgan listen to the community: No to sustainment!
Our coalition is united around the following demands:
-
End the the conflicts of interest
-
End racist and biased policing
-
Empower independent community oversight
-
Hold an independent investigation of officers with a history of misconduct and complaints
NOCOP was formed in 2021 as the New Orleans chapter of National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression. NOCOP’s primary campaign is the fight for community control of police via a Community Police Accountability Council (CPAC) in New Orleans. A CPAC is a civilian oversight board made up of democratically elected civilians with zero ties to law enforcement, equipped with the power to hire and fire officers, conduct investigations, appoint the Superintendent, decide police policies and budget, and more.
