The New Orleans Saints quarterback announced his retirement after 11 seasons, citing a serious shoulder injury that would have sidelined him for the entire 2025 season. Rather than undergo another surgery, Carr made the decision to step away from football—a move that marks a swift and surprising end to a turbulent tenure in New Orleans.

Carr joined the Saints in 2023 on a four-year, $150 million deal, arriving with high expectations to revitalize the team’s offense. But instead of a second act to his career, his time in black and gold was plagued by inconsistency, injuries, and mounting criticism. In 2024 alone, Carr dealt with a fractured hand, a concussion, and ongoing shoulder issues that limited both his availability and effectiveness on the field.

While Carr was known for his leadership and durability during his nine seasons with the Raiders—where he became the franchise’s all-time passing leader—his stint in New Orleans never reached those heights. Fans grew increasingly frustrated with his performance, particularly in critical moments where the offense stagnated. Former Saints receiver Michael Thomas even took public shots at Carr last season, posting on social media after an injury to Chris Olave, “Need his ass whooped,” suggesting Carr left Olave exposed to a dangerous hit.

Critics also pointed to Carr’s $50 million-plus price tag in salary cap implications, questioning the value of a quarterback who struggled to consistently move the chains. Saints fans who had long hoped for a successor to Drew Brees instead saw flashes of brilliance drowned out by game plans that rarely delivered when it mattered most.

Despite it all, Carr leaves the league with more than 41,000 passing yards, 257 touchdowns, and four Pro Bowl selections. His reputation as a tough, respected veteran remains intact, even as his New Orleans chapter ends without playoff success.

Carr’s departure now leaves a major question mark at quarterback for the Saints, who must once again search for stability under center.
