Hardin Playground in the historic 7th Ward is once again open for youth sports and community activities, thanks to a multi-agency partnership announced Monday.

The effort brings together the New Orleans Recreation Development (NORD) Commission, the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office through its NODICE Initiative, Councilmember Eugene Green, Council President JP Morrell’s Office, and The 18th Ward to restore and revitalize the long-underused playground.

The launch of youth baseball programming this month marks the first structured sports activities at the site in years. Officials say this expansion is part of a broader commitment to ensure children and families in the neighborhood have access to consistent, high-quality recreational opportunities.

Over the past several months, the collaborative partners worked closely with local residents to prepare the park for regular use. The 18th Ward, known for its community-based sports programs, will take the lead in overseeing structured activities at the playground.

City leaders and community members gathered Monday at Hardin Playground, located at 2500 Humanity Street, to celebrate the reopening and kick off the new baseball season.

According to officials, the effort reflects a broader citywide push to invest in underserved neighborhoods, provide equitable access to youth programming, and create safe, vibrant community spaces. The programming now in place at Hardin Playground will also offer young people more access to mentorship, healthy activities, and a sense of belonging within their own neighborhood.
