The New Orleans Public Library (NOPL) is gearing up for an action-packed summer, offering residents a variety of free, educational, and fun activities. This summer, NOPL is not only bringing back its popular annual Summer Fun & Reading Challenge, but also announcing new museum partnerships as part of its Culture Pass program. These initiatives aim to provide greater access to the city’s rich cultural offerings, ensuring there’s something for everyone—regardless of age or interest.
Expanding Access to Cultural Institutions
NOPL has expanded its Culture Pass program to include two exciting new museum partners: the Tate, Etienne, and Prevost Interpretive Center (TEP Center) and the Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC).
The TEP Center, located in the Lower 9th Ward’s McDonogh 19 building, is dedicated to preserving the history of the 1960 desegregation of New Orleans public schools by Leona Tate, Gail Etienne, and Tessie Prevost. Library cardholders over the age of 18 and living in Orleans Parish can reserve free admission to this important Civil Rights museum through the Culture Pass program.
Additionally, NOPL cardholders can now access the French Quarter History Galleries at the Historic New Orleans Collection. This museum offers a deep dive into the culture and history of New Orleans and the Gulf South region, preserving the stories and traditions that make the city unique.
“We’re thrilled to offer these two incredible new partners for our library cardholders this summer,” said Emily Painton, Executive Director and City Librarian of the New Orleans Public Library. “The TEP Center and the Historic New Orleans Collection both highlight important, often overlooked histories, and we hope that by partnering with them, we can make these stories more accessible to everyone in our community. These partnerships also help remove financial barriers to enjoying our city’s cultural institutions.”
The Culture Pass program now offers free access to 14 museums and attractions across New Orleans, making it easier for residents to explore and engage with the city’s rich cultural landscape. Cardholders can reserve passes at culturepass.nolalibrary.org.
Summer Fun & Reading Challenge: A Tradition of Learning and Fun
In addition to the new museum partnerships, the library is preparing for the return of its Summer Fun & Reading Challenge, running from June 1 to July 31. The program offers something for everyone, with events, activities, and prizes designed to keep reading skills sharp, encourage discovery, and create lasting memories.
“This summer, we’re aiming to provide a free ticket to adventure, imagination, and community,” said Shannan Cvitanovic, Executive Director of the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library, which sponsors the challenge. “Whether you’re a bookworm or just starting to read, whether you’re a child or an adult, there’s truly something for everyone. I can’t wait to see the community come together for this amazing tradition.”
Participants who sign up for the challenge receive a prize just for registering. Those who log 800 minutes of reading and complete a variety of library-themed activities will earn an additional prize, including a limited-edition tote bag designed by local artist Sean Clark.
“We’re excited to bring families, teens, and adults together for two months of fun, learning, and exploration,” Cvitanovic added. “This program has become a cherished summer tradition, and we’re proud to continue offering it with the support of our community and partners.”
Funding and Registration
The 2025 Summer Fun & Reading Program is funded in part by the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund, the Jazz & Heritage Foundation, and Raising Cane’s. Preregistration is now open. Residents can visit summerfun.nolalibrary.org to sign up and learn more, or visit any of the library’s locations to register in person.
As the summer approaches, the New Orleans Public Library is set to be a hub of activity, providing opportunities for learning, cultural engagement, and community fun. With new museum partnerships, a revamped reading challenge, and a lineup of free events, NOPL is truly making this summer one to remember.
