On May 29, Dollar General workers and advocates from Step Up Louisiana will rally to demand safe working conditions at the Earhart Blvd Dollar General Market. The action coincides with the corporation’s annual shareholder meeting where shareholders will vote whether to approve a comprehensive human rights policy to uphold the corporation’s commitment to a healthy and safe workplace and basic worker protections. The growing demand for worker safety comes on the heels of two violent incidents at Dollar General premises just this week, including a shooting in the parking lot of a Marrero, LA, Dollar General on May 28 and a violent incident and shooting involving the assault of a cashier in a Mobile, AL, store on May 27.

Workers and organizers continue to demand safe working conditions amid widespread public scrutiny and continued media coverage of Dollar General’s repeated track record of store safety violations. Over the past three years, a national worker justice movement led by Step Up Louisiana has escalated and garnered national attention in the fight for safer working conditions in dollar stores.
The comprehensive human rights policy up for a vote at the May 29 shareholder meeting would uphold Dollar General’s commitment to human rights, based on international human rights standards, throughout their stores. Such a policy is a standard business practice that protects both the workers and the company from legal, health, financial and safety risks. Many of Dollar General’s competitors have a human rights policy, including Dollar Tree, Target, Walmart, Big Lots and Costco.
In 2023, Dollar General shareholders approved a resolution to create an independent audit into worker safety and well-being at the corporation’s annual shareholder meeting, an unprecedented move by shareholders in response to growing pressure on Dollar General to improve store safety. After the audit was led by Jackson Lewis, one of the nation’s top union-busting law firms, labor advocates slammed the audit for falling short on improving store safety measures.
After two years of protests from workers and advocates at Dollar General headquarters in Goodlettsville, TN, during the corporation’s annual shareholder meeting, Dollar General moved the shareholder meeting to virtual format. It will take place at 8:00 a.m. CST and can be accessed at this link.
