Beignet Fest Foundation Launches First-Ever Summer Camp for Autistic Children in New Orleans

A new chapter in summer programming for children with autism has begun in New Orleans. On May 30, the Beignet Fest Foundation cut the ribbon on Camp Benny, a six-week summer camp specifically designed for children on the autism spectrum. The inaugural program begins June 9 on the University of Holy Cross campus in Algiers, in partnership with Kidcam Camp Programs.

With autism affecting 1 in every 31 children, the demand for inclusive summer activities has grown. Many families have struggled to find safe, engaging programs that meet their children’s unique needs. Camp Benny was developed to change that—offering sensory-friendly activities, peer connection, and developmental support in an affirming environment.

“Camp Benny is more than just a summer program—it’s a place where every child can truly thrive,” said Darbi Philibert, a Certified Autism Specialist and occupational therapist who is directing the program. “We’ve created an environment built on inclusivity, connection, and growth.”

Each three-week session will focus on helping campers build social skills, make friends, and enjoy meaningful interactive experiences. The camp features a high counselor-to-camper ratio, along with additional volunteers, or “buddies,” to ensure participants receive tailored attention.

For the University of Holy Cross, hosting Camp Benny is both a service and a learning opportunity. “We are thrilled to provide a setting that will allow these children to have a positive and affirming summertime experience,” said Dr. Stanton McNeely, president of the university. “The added bonus is that some of our education and healthcare students will be working on the Camp Benny staff, giving them a remarkable career-building experience right here on our campus.”

Kidcam’s CEO Melissa Conner said the collaboration was a long time coming. “We’ve talked about doing something like this for years, seeing the need across our footprint,” she said. “Now with the Beignet Fest Foundation, we’re able to put this incredible camp experience together.”

For Sherwood Collins, Executive Director of the Beignet Fest Foundation, Camp Benny represents a vision realized. “This started as a dream when we created the Foundation. Camp Benny isn’t just a huge benefit for kids but also for parents who can go to work knowing their child is in a safe and engaging space.”

Understanding that affordability is a barrier for many families, the Foundation has committed to financial accessibility. More than 50% of campers this year are receiving financial aid, made possible through proceeds from the 2024 Beignet Fest and support from The Weishaupt Family Foundation/Ruby Slipper, Walmart, Chalmette Refinery, and other donors. The Tres Doux Krewe, an all-women’s community group formed by the Foundation, also played a key role in fundraising and shaping the camp’s development through its advisory board—many of whom are parents of autistic children or clinicians in autism support services.

Although both of this summer’s sessions are full, parents interested in future enrollment are encouraged to email campbenny@beignetfest.com. More information is available at campbennynola.org.

The Beignet Fest Foundation will continue its mission with the upcoming 2025 Beignet Fest, scheduled for Saturday, November 15 at New Orleans City Park. Tickets are expected to go on sale later this month.
