The Friends of the New Orleans Public Library will hold its first-ever all-children’s used book sale this month at the Norman Mayer Library in Gentilly, offering families a chance to stock up on affordable books while supporting library programs.

The two-day sale takes place indoors at 3001 Gentilly Blvd. on Friday, August 15 from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday, August 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is open to the public, and shoppers can pay by cash, card, or Venmo.

Organizers say the event will feature a wide variety of gently used books, from picture books for the youngest readers to chapter books and young adult titles for teens. “This sale is a perfect opportunity to fill up your bookshelves for your kids and grandkids, or any child who you want to introduce to the joys of reading,” said Executive Director Shannan Cvitanovic.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Friends’ ongoing work to fund library services, programs, and resources—including the popular Summer Fun & Reading Challenge. Since 1957, the nonprofit has supported literacy initiatives and helped library staff deliver services to meet the city’s diverse needs.

Cvitanovic encourages parents and caregivers to bring children along to choose their own books. “We love seeing what grabs kids’ attention, from joke books to craft books to novels,” she said. “We had a five-year-old at a book sale last year who was obsessed with learning about Egyptian culture, and of course, there are always kids who are into dinosaurs and animals. We can’t wait to see what books they decide to take home.”
