The Second Line Arts Collective is teaming up with the New Orleans Public Library to launch the 2025–2026 Little Stompers Library Series. This free, three-part program introduces young children and their caregivers to the sounds and traditions of New Orleans music through live performance, movement, and storytelling.
The series begins on Saturday, October 4 at the Algiers Regional Library on Holiday Drive. Families can register for 30-minute music sessions designed for children ages one through five. The sessions will be held on six consecutive Saturdays, ending November 8. Children are grouped by age with Big Easy Rascals for those 12 to 23 months, Swamp Stompers for ages two to three, and Mardi Gras Mambos for ages three to five.
The program is funded by The Great Circle Foundation, Inc. and is intended to make music education accessible to all families. Executive Director Darrian Douglas said the goal is to remove barriers and share the joy of New Orleans music with children across the city. “Connecting with more families, no matter their social class, race, or background, is what matters most to me. This is about spreading love for our culture and creating the next generation of listeners, supporters, and advocates for the arts,” Douglas said.
Families who cannot attend the library sessions will still have the opportunity to participate. SLAC provides interactive video lessons featuring New Orleans artist Robin Barnes, which allow parents and children to experience Little Stompers classes from home.
The Little Stompers Library Series is part of a broader effort by the Second Line Arts Collective to support young musicians and bring music into the lives of children at every stage. Founded in 2016 by New Orleans musicians Gregory Agid and Darrian Douglas, the nonprofit offers community programs that blend traditional music instruction with business education, helping artists develop sustainable careers.
In addition to the library series, SLAC runs Little Stompers Concerts for elementary school audiences and the Sanaa Music Workshop for young musicians preparing for professional paths. Together, these programs reflect the group’s mission of honoring New Orleans musical traditions while equipping artists with the tools to thrive creatively and financially.
The library series will expand to two additional library locations in 2026, with details to be announced. Families can reserve a spot now by visiting Second Line Arts Collective’s website.
