When History Warns, Democracy Must Listen

There are moments in history when silence is not an option. Moments that call for memory, honesty, and the courage to speak plainly.

One of the greatest mistakes any nation can make is believing that the warning signs of the past could never appear again. History teaches us the opposite. The darkest chapters rarely begin with their worst acts. They begin quietly. Gradually. One step at a time. Often wrapped in patriotic language. Sometimes presented as common sense. Occasionally even cheered.

Adolf Hitler did not begin with concentration camps. Long before the world saw that horror, he was convincing ordinary people that their struggles were someone else’s fault. Immigrants. Intellectuals. Journalists. Neighbors who looked different or believed differently.

He attacked the press.

He stirred fear of outsiders.

He replaced understanding with anger.

He discredited educators and expertise.

And he promoted the dangerous idea that only he could restore national greatness.

History shows us something important: democracies do not usually fall in a single dramatic moment. They weaken little by little. Norms are pushed aside. Truth is twisted. Facts become negotiable. Citizens begin to see each other not as neighbors, but as enemies.

As a Member of the United States Congress, and as someone who has sworn an oath to defend the Constitution, I take those lessons seriously. Not as a partisan talking point, but as a patriotic responsibility.

Our democracy is strong. But it has never been guaranteed.

The founders of this nation understood human nature. That is why they built a system of checks and balances. That is why they protected a free press. That is why they believed an informed and educated public was essential to the survival of the republic. And that is why they made clear that no person should ever stand above the law or above the country.

When truth is attacked, we must defend it.

When people are divided, we must bring them together.

When fear is used as a weapon, we must answer with courage.

This is not about left or right. It is about right and wrong.

America has always been strongest when we widen the circle of opportunity, not when we close it. When we protect freedom, not weaken it. When we recognize that our diversity is not a threat to our nation, but one of its greatest strengths.

History may not repeat itself exactly, but it often sends warnings. The question for every generation is whether we will recognize them.

I believe the American people will.

I believe in this country.

I believe in the Constitution.

And I believe that when our democracy is tested, the people of the United States will stand up and defend it.

That responsibility belongs to all of us.

And that promise must never be broken.
