Whether you’re visiting New Orleans or you’re a local looking for a getaway in your own backyard, one thing we all have in common is the need for a fun summer experience. A lot of time that involves a pool and all of the amenities. Last weekend, I was invited to enjoy “staycation” at the Royal Sonesta, 300 Bourbon St., so that I could indulge in their new swim program. The best part is—you don’t even have to be staying at the hotel to have a nice little afternoon poolside.
On the hotel’s third floor, right in the heart of the French Quarter, the Royal Sonesta boasts a gorgeous pool that comes complete with poolside snacks and cocktails. After I checked in, I made my way down to the pool so that I could soak up some sun and take in the vibes. I loved that there were plenty of loungers, towels that you can grab after you go for a dip, easy access bathrooms (always important!) and poolside wait service. That’s right, as you sit lounging at the pool a nice woman will come up and take your food and drink order. Very fancy!
I indulged in the Frozen Patrón Margarita that had the perfect amount of “kick” to it. Other frozen concoctions include Pina Colada, Watermelon Lemonade, and Cosmo, and there is also a full selection of other cocktails, canned beer, seltzers, and zero proof cocktails. In other words: whatever you’re craving, the pool bar has you covered.
If you’re planning on making a full day of it, the food menu has a wide variety of selections such as Crawfish Fries smothered in Etouffee Sauce, Cheddar Cheese, and Fried Crawfish; Louisiana Crab Cakes with Brussel Slaw, Charred Lemon, and Cajun Aioli; Watermelon and Feta Salad with Mint, Feta, and Lime Vinaigrette; Grilled Peach and Burrata Salad with Arugula, Grilled Peaches, Burrata, Candied Pecans, Aged Balsamic, and Extra Virgin Olive Oil; as well as a selection of tacos, a club sandwich, a burger, and much more!
By now, I’m sure you’re wondering how much all of this fancy stuff costs, so let’s break it down. If you just want the pool, food, and drink experience, a pool pass is $25 and that includes discounted valet parking. On Sundays, the Royal Sonesta kicks it up a notch with a poolside DJ for $35 per person. If you want room access so that you can make a full day of it (and you’d like a place to recharge, midday) you can get a room with your pool pass for $155. Last but not least, if you see yourself being a pool regular, you should treat yourself to a Swim Club pass for $500. From now until September 22, this pass gets you pool access, $20 valet parking, a 10% discount on on-site food and drinks, and access to the hotel’s fitness center!
During my stay, service was excellent and we enjoyed dinner at Desire Restaurant on-site, where I indulged in crab cakes and shrimp and grits that were fantastic. My fiancé had chargrilled oysters and raved that there were some of the best he has ever had. If you’re looking for dining that is next level, Restaurant R’evolution is also on-site and is considered one of the best restaurants in the city! In addition, The Jazz Playhouse is a cozy little jazz club that features performers nightly in an “old New Orleans” atmosphere. With all of these incredible options, without even leaving the hotel, it’s obvious that the Royal Sonesta should be your vacation (or staycation) destination!
